Beautification 101.

How do you transform an unsightly lot to an urban oasis?  It's as easy as 1-2-3. 

1.  Round up eager, hardworking volunteers.  A big shout-out to our Hopkins volunteers!

2.  Clean up trash and debris.

3.  Add donated plantings, shrubs, reclaimed materials, and inexpensive mulch to add style and flair.

 

Total Cost.  $20 and sore muscles.
Total Value.  One happy resident:)

 

Emergency Preparedness.

Storms we will not soon forget.  Most of us have been affected by one or more of these storms in past years.  Meteorologists’ predictions for 2013 include potential for more severe weather.  

 

 

We live in a country with seeming endless resources.  What do we do if faced with water shortages, utility outages, or evacuation?  While it is impossible to prepare for complete devastation;   we can ready ourselves with small steps.

Dollar stores and discount retailers offer a variety of non-perishable food, water, batteries, and flashlights.  You can easily add items to your family’s disaster kit without breaking the bank.  Hardware stores should have inexpensive tarps and rope.

Basic Emergency Supply Checklist: 

1.       Water. (One gallon, per person, per day).
2.       Non-perishable food.
3.       Manual Can Opener.
4.       First Aid Kit.
5.       Personal Hygiene Items.
6.       Bleach, Hand Sanitizer.
7.       Radio, Extra Batteries.
8.       Flashlight, Extra Batteries.
9.       Tarp, Rope.
10.   Rain Gear.
11.   Extra Blankets.
12.   Hat, Gloves, Thermal Underwear.
13.   Special Items: 
a.       Important Family and Financial Documents.
b.      Medications.

All important documents should be stored in a plastic zip bag.  Store your kit in a convenient location easily accessible to all family members. 

In the case of mandatory evacuation; heed the warnings.  All family members should designate a meeting place in case of separation.

Newhallville June Safety Meeting.

On behalf of Chaplain Alan Kendrix (moderator), you are invited to join our Newhallville June Safety Meeting. It will take place Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at 6pm. We meet in the Community Room at 596 Winchester Avenue.

Spend Time This Summer At Yale Farm.

Our friends and neighbors at the Yale Farm located at 345 Edwards Street have invited our community to visit this summer.

Families with children will especially enjoy Volunteer Workdays.  Come for one hour or two.  There are baby chickens that will need attention.  All ages are encouraged to sign up.

So far, the dates look like this:

Friday, May 24 from 1:00-5:00pm
Sunday, May 26 from 1:00-5:00pm
June 14- August 24: Fridays and Saturdays from 9:00am until 4:00pm

Here is some useful information from Jacqui Lewin, Outreach Coordinator for the farm:

• If you’re coming with more than five (5) people, let us know.
• Always bring a water bottle, sun protection, and wear work-and-weather appropriate clothing.   We work rain or shine!
• In the summer we break for lunch from 12:00-1:00.  BYO lunch, but there’s always salad to share:)

Winchester Street Cleanup CANCELED.

Our Winchester Avenue Cleanup is canceled due to the threat of severe weather for Thursday.  Safety first!

 

 

Read/Cave Street Cleanup Scheduled for Friday, 5.17.13

Just a reminder the Read/Cave Street Cleanup is scheduled for this Friday, 5/17/13 at 4pm.    All volunteers are asked to meet at 838 Winchester Avenue (corner of Cave/Winchester).  The Street Cleanup Captain is Vinita Mullings. 

Please bring a set of safety gloves to work with; trash bags and tools provided.
